What to Look for When Buying Tennis Shoes
Tennis is a grueling sport on the shoe. Often the first to give out is the outsoles and toe area. Many people wonder if they can wear just any ol' shoe while playing tennis. It's definitely not recommended, you need a shoe that is specifically designed for the type of movement playing tennis entails. A good tennis shoe will help you comfortably indure the rigors of the games quick stops and starts, short sprints, and frequent lateral movement.
As you serve, run and stop, your soles play a very important part of your tennis game. Depending on what type of court you typically play on will determine the right traction and sole pattern your tennis shoes need.
If you play on clay, you'll want an outersole with a harringbone pattern (it looks like a series of interconnected w's) which allows you to slide into position for a shot.
If you play mostly on hard surfaces, an outsole with varied patterns works best.
Remember that increased durability means increased shoe weight. A good pair of tennis shoes should flex and bend at the ball of your foot instead of the arch.
Tennis involves very quick side-to-side movement with sudden stops, so a good pair of tennis shoes with stable lateral support is important.
Lateral support helps with balance, prevents ankle roll over and helps take strain off of your ankles and knees.
