Platform shoes are boots, shoes or sandals with thick soles. They are often made of cork, plastic, rubber or wood (platform shoes made of wood are referred to as clogs).
Platform shoes first came on the scene in the early 1438 but were called chopines. The chopine was one of the most extreme style of footwear ever created, and was socially condemned as morally wrong to wear them.
Chopines originated in Venice and were first worn by prostitutes. But was soon adopted by Venetian Aristocrats.
In the 1930's Italian designer Salvatore Ferragamo popularized the platform shoe. He brought the style up to date with layered cork soles and plaform sandals with inset with mosaics of gilded glass.
Below is a picture of one of Salvatore's designs.
Salvatore Ferragamo is credited with introducing the platform shoe in the later 1930s. As seen in this ankle-strap sandal, the platform brings an anchoring weight to the wearer that is in direct opposition to the stiletto heel. Particularly in the 1940s, platforms were designed with a high arch, but as exemplified here, they originated with the heel only slightly above the toes.
